It's interesting to compare Alyx: flatscreen mod to Half Life 2: VR mod. People who are into VR mostly for the immersion love the hell out of Alyx, being able to pick up random clutter, look at the liquid inside bottles etc. But playing it in flatscreen really highlights how stripped down and simplified it was to avoid disturbing VR beginners, and I really wonder can you play the whole game without VR? With a special mod, it's possible but I would emphasize not doing it. The game wasn't made for non VR, so the controls are really janky and the gameplay won't be the same. Everything good about the game will be terrible. Get a cheap VR like a Quest 2 (or 3 later this year) and get used to VR.
I think there are better ways to let people have fun with Half Life Alyx, without using VR. My thought is a Co-op Mod, that allows you to play WITH or AGAINST a friend who is using VR. There are many mechanics that would work realy nice. Valve should create it by themselfs and make the Non-VR Part free to play, so people get in touch with the game.
